"The only Independent Stroke Support Group in the Peterborough District for Stroke Survivors, Carers, and their families, run by ourselves. In 2022, we lost our valuable Peterborough City Council funding, which paid for a Stroke Association Volunteer to help run our group and support Stroke Survivors in Peterborough. Two Stroke groups were operating on different days, one for survivors with Aphasia and the other for Stroke Support.
Instead of closing the group, we decided to create a single group with the original members. We have over 20 regular attendees, while others receive monthly updates about our group via email. Not all can attend in person due to travel or health issues. We are a friendly group that meets every fortnight for a hot drink and a chat. We charge members a small annual fee to cover insurance and related costs. During meetings, we enjoy playing Dominoes, Boccia, or General Knowledge Quizzes. Our members organise events throughout the year, such as group lunches, ten-pin bowling, and talks by topical speakers. The Stroke Association offers various online Zoom stroke support programmes for viewing at home. We can access specialist help and information from The Stroke Association and other local providers in Peterborough. This allows us to share these resources with our members, carers, and families. We also support each other based on our lived experience of Stroke, recognising that each stroke has different outcomes and needs.
Recently, we moved our venue to the Tesco Community Space at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in Hampton. This venue provides ample disabled parking, good wheelchair accessibility, and nearby shops." - Peter.
